the different ways to make wings..

 I think it would be so fun to have wings like Tink!

Ok, has anyone seen "Ever After" with Drew Barrymore? I'm sure a lot of you have... anyway, when "Danielle" goes to the ball, she wears these gorgeous wings:

(It's a masquerade ball, and she's dressed as a butterfly. It fits into the story...) Anyway, I found some info about the wings in an interveiw with the woman who made the "Breathe" dress here. Here's an excerpt:

"I wanted the inner corset to be as light as a feather at the front but was like scaffolding at the back. Although the wings were very light, as wings go, they were still heavy enough to be in danger of pulling the bodice away from her back at the top, hence the rigidity. 

Sadly, I can't remember the name of the prop maker who made the wings. I think her first name was Nicole. They were made with piano wire and organza and were beautifully and delicately made."

Anyways, I decided to make some wings myself.  I just used a "quickie" method, but they're still pretty.... I should have researched first, though, because this way using wire hangers would have been more stable.

Here they are! They're more yellow in real life... all I did to make them was cut wings out of some yellow cardboard (?) and stapled  some old curtain fabric to 'em. They fasten with elastic straps on the back.

I put Elmers glue on the edges and sprinkled glitter on.... it's really pretty in real life, but some how you can barely tell in the pics. *sigh*

I gotta say, unless you only have 20 minutes (like I did) don't make them the way I did. They don't last very long before they start bending!

Yes, there are Queen Anne's Lace flowers that are at least a head taller than I am. Crazy, isn't it?

What I'm wearing:
green blouse: Old Navy (on clearance, then on sale! Yay!) And besides, Tink always wears green in the movies.
denim skirt: Old Navy. It was also on sale. This is another one of my favorites. It's so fun to wear!
boots: Ross, or TJMaxx. My fave pair of shoes.

My boots. Love them! Although, you'll notice I'm not wearing them in the other pics. Long story. Basically, it was VERY muddy and wet where we took the pics, so I switched out my nice boots for my rubber ones. I had no idea you'd be able to tell!

I've also been looking for party ideas, and found that "Enchanted Forest" Weddings are a 2010 trend (and here's another great link: http://www.1weddingsource.com/blog/wedding-themes/a-nature-inspired-wedding/). Not like I'm getting married anytime soon (*grin*) but the pictures are gorgeous!

Skirts :)

Ever since I was a very little girl, I have loved dresses and skirts.
Now that I can sew, I have enjoyed actually being able to make my dress or skirt designs! My ideas are no longer confined to my imagination, or a piece of paper.... which makes me very glad that God has given me the abilities and supplies needed to do so.
I was given a sewing machine when I was 10 or 11, by a very sweet lady who's mother-in-law had given it to her. But, she didn't sew at all, and didn't use it.... so she gave it to me :). I am very grateful.
A sewing machine, you know, is a very, very important necessity when it comes to sewing your own clothes.
Unfortunately, my ambitious, 10-or-11-year-old self didn't know how to take care of a sewing machine.... Fortunately, my Brother machine was used only off-and-on.... until a few months ago. I haven't oiled it in many years. And at the rate I use it, it should be oiled every other week.
So I downloaded a free PDF manual, and I'm going to oil it soon, hopefully tonight.

Meanwhile, I've been hand stitching some small projects, and organizing my fabric supply.

ANYWAYS, the title says "skirts". Here's my latest ideas.

I like this one at Maurices:

One of these days, I'll sew a denim Prairie skirt, like A or B.

I like this pattern (Simplicity 2655) too. The one with black flowers, maybe slightly longer, in denim.

I'm also thinking of sewing a just below knee length skirt that's very full and flouncy. (sorry... I don't have a pic to explain)

6. Ever After (1998)

     This is a more realistic Cinderella... with Leonardo DaVinci as the fairy godmother! Drew Barrymore was so cute as Danielle

          7. Cranford (BBC, 2008)

Cranford... a small town completely run by women (all old maids or widows). What will happen to them when the railway comes?
This was a very funny miniseries.... and a great deal of it was true. Cranford is based on three novels by Elizabeth Gaskell (who also wrote Wives and Daughters, and North and South). She based them on what happened in the small town Knutsford, where she visited her aunts several times a year. So, yes; there was actually, in real life, a cow that wore gray flannel pjs!

          8. Fireproof

 This was an awesome movie too. Can't wait for "Courageous", the next movie from Sherwood Pictures. It'll be in theaters in 2011, and I think they're filming it this spring, actually.


               9. Little Women (1994)

  You've heard a lot about this one lately two. I liked this adaptation very much (especially the costumes).... but, as Jo March pointed out on her blog, Scraps from My Workbasket, Jo always sulks when she does something wrong. She also claims that she "rather craves violence". Louisa May Alcott would be furious if she saw that! The adapter (not sure if that's the correct term....) made that up, and he/she shouldn't have! In doing so, they re-scetched Jo's charectar.... something a movie should never do.
All in all, though, it's a very good movie.


          10. Sense and Sensibility (1998)

Well, I already did a post about this one here.
As I said, I love this adaptation... and it's my fave Jane Austen novel, too.

Movies to fall in love with... part one

         1. One Night with the King

 Don't let the title scare you away! This is one of my favorites. One Night with the King is the story of Hadassah, known to most of us as Esther.The casting, costumes, sets, and locations are all perfect! Chip at Chipmunk's Corner (http://chipmunkscorner.blogspot.com) plans to do a costume study on this movie! Yay!


      2.  Emma BBC

 You've heard a lot about this one. :)



       3. Emma (1996)

 This one is very funny! Though it isn't as accurate to the book as the BBC's is, it's good for short attention spans (i.e. me, when I was first starting my obsession with Jane Austen :) Even my sister, the one who likes computer games, sports, and Christian pop music, laughs at almost everything  that is said in this movie.



       4. Pride and Predejude (2005)

You've probably seen this one already... but I had to include it. The whole thing was done beautifully.... though if you are new to the story and/or Regency England, you'll have to watch it a few times before you understand what they're a talking about. (I should know. I myself was confused dreadfully at first) :)




           5. Miss Potter

 I can honestly say it is postively charming, from start to finish. Set in very early Edwardian England (1902, I think) this is the tale of The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Well, actually, it is the tale of Miss Beatrix Potter, the author of the best-selling children's books, who falls in love with her publisher, Mr. Norman Warn. (That is all I shall say..... for I am sure I will give it all away if I say more.)

Alice in Wonderland...

 

This movie doesn't look like it would be very interesting, but the costumes look amazing!!!

Uh oh. I can see my #8 on my sewing projects list on the horizon now!

Alice Kingsley (I think that's her name) is doing a replica... she's embroidering the whole hem by hand! Here's the link.

Alice wears a really cool necklace with this dress, by the way. You can buy it here. (for a good sum, of course.) And do you know that Claires has a new line? "Alice in Fashionland".
